- Belt length vs. your height. Under 40 inches feels cramped if you're over 5'8". Taller walkers want 42"+. Belt width under 16" feels like a tightrope.
- Weight capacity with margin. Cheap models top out at 220 lbs and the motor strains near the limit. Give yourself at least 50 lbs of headroom over your body weight.
- Real noise numbers. "Quiet" is marketing. Look for an actual dB rating — under 55 dB is safe for video calls; over 65 dB will annoy neighbors through thin floors.
- Speed range that matches your use. 0.5–4 mph covers desk walking. If you ever want to jog, you need 6+ mph and a longer belt — that's a 2-in-1 model, not a flat pad.
- Folded size and where it will live. Measure your storage spot first: under sofa (needs under ~5" height), under bed, or upright against a wall. If it doesn't fit your storage, you won't use it.
- Motor power for daily use. 2.0 HP continuous (not peak) is the floor for daily walking. Underpowered motors overheat and die early — the #1 cause of 1-star reviews.
- Safety stop. A magnetic safety key or auto-stop when you step off. Non-negotiable if kids or pets share the space.
- Display you can actually read. You'll glance down mid-stride. Big, high-contrast numbers beat a fancy app you'll open twice.
- Warranty length. 1 year on frame and motor minimum. Brands that offer 2+ years are telling you something about their failure rates.
- The "deal" test. Check the price history — many "50% off" walking pads sell at the "sale" price year-round. A real deal is 20%+ below the 90-day average.
